Unfit Safee a non-starter against Perak

Safee SaliNational striker Safee Sali is a non-starter again when Johor Darul Takzim – still reeling from the shock 3-2 defeat to Pahang in a mid-week match in Kuantan – take on Perak at Larkin Stadium tomorrow.

"Safee will be on the bench again. He is not fit. In fact, he was not supposed to play against Pahang but I brought him on in the last few minutes when we were 3-2 down, hoping that there could be some change of luck," said coach-cum-manager Fandi Ahmad.

"He will not feature in my first team against Perak. I want him to be fully fit. I want to him to get back his hunger (for goals). He is slowly regaining his fitness but starting a competitive match is out of the question for now."

Safee and Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak were not in the first team for the match against Pahang. Fandi brought on Safee for Ahmad Ezrie Sazali in the 87th minute after Pahang had taken a 3-2 lead through R. Surendran in the 83rd minute.

Pahang drew level with a brace by with a double strike by Fauzi Rozlan (50th and 72nd minutes) after Johor Darul Takzim had gone 2-0 up with goals by Safiq Rahim (11th) and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (25th).

Fandi told sports247.my that Johor Darul Takzim would have to put the defeat to Pahang aside and look forward to the coming matches, starting with the match against Perak.

"I must admit that despite having the 'stars' there are some shortcomings that need to be ironed out. I am not happy with the manner in which we let our guard down and allowed Pahang to comeback after we led 2-0."

One area that left Fandi frustrated is the backline, led by Azmi Muslim, which crumbled when Pahang came in waves from the flanks with substitutes R. Gopinathan and R. Surendran doing the damage.

"We have to beat Perak after the defeat to Pahang. This is our first home match and we need a winning start. Perak are riding high after their win over T-Team," added Fandi.

Meanwhile, Fandi said Italian Simone Del Nero would be given a late fitness test for the Perak match. The former Lazio midfielder is nursing a hamstring injury and did not play against Pahang.

"But I will not risk playing him because there is still a long way to go for the season. I don't want my team to be bogged down by injuries to key players."
