Safee Sali

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's soccer star Safee Sali who plays for Indonesian professional outfit Pelita Jaya is in a quandary following FIFA banning the Indonesia Super League (ISL).

Pelita Jaya plays in the ISL.

According to Indonesian news portal Republika, FIFA had issued a letter to All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) president Djohar Arifin Husin stating that it did not recognise the ISL.

According to the contents of the letter, signed by FIFA secretary-general Jarome Valcke and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) secretary-general Datuk Alex Soosay, the ban also extends to all players, officials and referees involved in the ISL.

"A freeze has also been imposed on transfer of players from the ISL, effectively preventing them from playing in leagues or championships in countries which are FIFA affiliates.

"Players like Safee are also affected, they cannot play outside the ISL," the portal said.

Prior to this, Safee had said if Pelita Jaya was affected by the ban, he would try to ply his trade elsewhere and at the same time represent Malaysia's national squad.

FIFA, however, has given Indonesia until March 20 to sort out its football problems, failing which harsher action would be taken.

Safee Sali | FIFA, ISL Dan FAM

Kelantan's Peter Butler questions Safee Sali's move to Pelita Jaya ...

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 11:00 PM PST

Kelantan's new head coach Peter Butler believes that Malaysia's top striker, Safee Sali should be playing for bigger clubs in Indonesia rather than the likes of Pelita Jaya.

Perplexed by the decision made by Safee, the 45-year-old Englishman, who speaks fluent Bahasa Malaysia and Indonesia, claims that Safee Sali should have chosen either the likes of Persib Bandung or Persija Jakarta to play for in the Indonesian Super League.

"Pelita Jaya? I didn't know about that. I didn't know what was Safee thinking about," said the former BEC Tero Sasana coach.

He made the remark when a journalist asked about his take on the current situation of Sali, who is in a limbo after the Indonesian Super League was not endorsed by the All Indonesia Football Association (PSSI).

He refused to comment on the issue but claimed that the 27-year-old will make the right call if the problem escalates.

"I've no comments on this situation. Safee would surely know what to do," said Butler, who once coached Persiba Balikpapan in the Indonesian Super League.

Safee Sali has quelled rumours about his departure from Pelita Jaya as he is happy with his club. However, the Pelita Jaya captain has urged PSSI and Fifa to solve the crisis that would prevent him from featuring for the Malaysian national team.

Butler was present during the Unity Cup match press conference in Kota Bharu. He will be leading his side against Indonesia Premier League side Persebaya Surabaya later on Friday and will head to Surabaya for the return leg on December 28.

The friendly will be the first of its kind between Indonesian and Malaysian clubs as both countries are looking to develop their leagues and also gauge their teams' strengths.

Kelantan will be debuting their new signings, strikers Denny Antwi, Mohammad Ghaddar and Azlan Ismail; midfielders Indra Putra Mahayuddin and Norfarhan Mohammad; and defender Azizi Mat Rose.

Safee Ready To Remain With Pelita Jaya

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 06:55 PM PST

PETALING JAYA – National striker Safee Sali reiterated his desire to renew his contract with Pelita Jaya FC despite the current strife at the Indonesian club due to an imminent ban by FIFA.

The 27-year-old sensational striker who contract expires by end January (FIFA), remains confident that the All Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) and FIFA would be able to resolve the crisis that could prevent him from featuring for the Malaysian national team.

Safee said he was prepared to face any eventuality and has a 'Plan B' in place in the event that the crisis could not be resolved.

"Since I believe the problem can be solved by PSSI and FIFA soon, the opportunity to play abroad must be used to the fullest. I am ready to extend my contract with Pelita Jaya," he told reporters at Mutiara Damansara near here.

Safee, a former Selangor stalwart said in the event that his club Pelita Jaya or the PSSI was banned, he would either play for Brisbane Roars in the Australian A League or play for a Belgium club that is also owned by the owner of Pelita Jaya, Nirwan Dermawan Bakrie.

"I don't want to think of this problem…I am not concerned because it is actually an administration and management problem involving the football association of Indonesia.

"I am a professional player who only want to play on any league that can help improve my capacity as well as that of the national team," said the Kajang-born player.

He added that the extraordinary support from the local fans was one of the main factors in his decision to remain at the club.

Scoring seven goals in 14 appearances was a good achievement throughout the 2011 season with Pelita Jaya, he said.

Safee moved to Pelita Jaya last season after his exploits in the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2010. Since then, he has been the talisman for the side as he scored seven goals to help them beat the drop last season.

This campaign, he was appointed the captain of the team and is expected to be retained in the position for the new season which starts on Feb 15. – BERNAMA

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek wants national striker Safee Sali who plays for Pelita Jaya FC in the Indonesian Super League (ISL) to remain calm and not make any hasty decisions that may hamper his playing career.

Ahmad Shabery said Safee need to allow the All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) to resolve their quandary following FIFA's decision to ban the Indonesia Super League (ISL).

"Right now, Safee need not be worried because it does not affect the ranking. The only concern is that if the ISL was banned, what will be the implication for him," he told Bernama when met here.

According to Indonesian news portal Republika, FIFA had issued a letter to All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) president Djohar Arifin Husin stating that it did not recognise the ISL.

Safee Sali Thinking Leave Pelita Jaya

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 02:51 PM PST

Pelita Jaya Striker, Safee Sali, began to consider his future at Pelita Jaya. The player who is also a mainstay of the Malaysian national team is also intended to move from Pelita if the club got a sanction from the PSSI.

As reported previously, Pelita threatened with sanctions because of play in the
illegal league according to PSSI, Indonesia Super League (ISL). Not only the club, the players who are also involved in it also threatened not to be defending their respective national teams. This fact turned out to harass the mind of this 27-year-old player.

"This issue is confusing me. I'm still awaiting a decision from the PSSI and FIFA, and hopefully it will explain everything. If there are sanctions (for Pelita), then I would choose to play outside of Indonesia. I have not really decided, but I still awaiting the development of the PSSI and FIFA, if I could still play for the national team, "said Safee Sali as reported by Goal.com.

"They (FAM) monitor the progress here. FAM concerned with my being here because I'm a team player. Federation has always supported me to play at this club, and they saw my development here. I'm still hoping to play for the national team and I look forward to survive with Pelita Jaya, "he continued.

One of the Officials Pelita Jaya, Rahim Soekasah, can not comment much about this issue. He said still looking at Pelita Safee feel happy and that means there's no problem. "What I heard so far is just a rumor. He definitely will stay with us," said Rahim.

The same statement submitted by the Manager Pelita, Lalu Mara. "He (Safee) is our main striker. I hope it (Safee go) does not happen and I guess it will not happen because we play in official competitions. If that finally happens, we will search for a new striker," said Lalu Mara.

Malaysian striker Safee Sali brushes off Pelita Jaya exit talks amidst ...

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 07:40 AM PST

Safee Sali has reiterated his desire to remain at Pelita Jaya despite the current strife at the Indonesian club.

Pelita could be facing sanctions from Fifa for participating in a league that is not endorsed by the PSSI and it could prevent Safee from featuring for the Malaysian national team.

However, the striker is keen to remain with the Karawang-based side although he did not rule out a transfer away from the club.

"This problem makes me confused. I am still waiting to hear from PSSI and Fifa, and hopefully it will be cleared up soon," he told reporters during a press conference in a Pelita Jaya promotional event on Thursday.

"If there has to be sanctions [for Pelita] then I would choose to play outside of Indonesia. I have not really decided yet but I am still waiting for further developments from PSSI and Fifa, so that I can still play for the national team."

"They [FAM] are monitoring the developments here. FAM are worried about my existence here because I am a national team player."

"The federation has always supported me playing for this club, and they have seen my progress here. So I am still hoping to play for the national team and I wish to stay with Pelita Jaya."

PSSI announced that the Indonesian Premier League (IPL) led by Prima Indonesia Sportindo, will be the official league whereas the Indonesian Super League (ISL) will not be part of PSSI's plans.

However, quite a number of clubs have decided to participate in the ISL, causing a massive stir with the PSSI and Fifa. As a result, speculation has been mounting that the Malaysian striker could be forced to leave the club but Pelita Jaya's director sees no truth in it

Rahim Soekasah told Goal.com: "There's not much to say at the moment. As far as I know Safee is very happy here, no problems whatsoever. All I'm hearing are nothing but rumours. He will definitely stay with us."

The Bakrie family who currently run Pelita Jaya are also owners of A-League club Brisbane Roars, which could be a potential destination for Safee in case he wants a move away. It is no secret that the ex-Selangor striker has always been keen on a move to a bigger league but the Indonesian club's head coach is hoping otherwise.

Lalu Mara said: "He [Safee] is our main striker. He is always our target man. I hope it does not happen [him leaving]. And I think it will not happen because we are playing in an official competition. If it happens, of course we'll have to look for a new striker."

Safee moved to Pelita Jaya last season after his exploits in the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2010. Since then, he has been the talisman for the side as he scored seven goals to help them beat the drop last season. This campaign, he has been appointed the captain of the team and has notched one goal in three matches so far.
